emu |
Pronunciation (Bale ka-yime karri-ngeybun?) |
Listen to the audio. Pay attention to the 'nj' (IPA= ɲ) sound at the end of the second syllable. |
Morphology (Karri-wokdjobdjobke) |
The al- part in the first syllable is otherwise a feminine class noun prefix in Kundjeyhmi (= ngal- in Kunwinjku and some other Bininj Kunwok dialects). This is because in the creation story, emu is a woman, of the al-kangila subsection (her skin name). Also for many bird names, the default noun class is feminine. |
